Microstructural, Mechanical and Wear Properties of Al–1.3%Si Alloy as Compared to Hypo/Hyper–Eutectic Compositions in Al–Si Alloy System

The microstructure, mechanical properties, and wear behavior of three Al–Si alloys, namely: Al–1.3%Si, Al–1.5%Si Al–13.5%Si were investigated. specimens examined by using an optical microscope to investigate the microstructural features pin materials. Microhardness numbers parameters determined a microhardness indenter compression test, respectively. dry sliding test was carried out pin-on-disc apparatus varying rotational speed (250, 350, 450 rpm), normal load (5, 10 20 N) time 15 min) at constant diameter 300 mm. surface roughness index (Ra) worn surfaces profilometer. microstructure Al–1.3%Si alloy described as fine eutectic colonizing in FCC-Al phase matrix. Coarse dendrites surrounding primary grains observed alloy. showed uniform layered structure + Diamond Si eutectic. average number directly proportional concentration. with high (47.16 HV) excellent resistance exhibited smoother end-of-wear test. improved this case could be due presence Diamond-Si hard large quantities compared other compositions. On hand, poorer because mass loss action dominated particle detachment mechanism. response vs. speed, increased when controlled increased. However, Pareto charts main effects parametric interactions that factor must considered studying tribological properties alloys.
